What’s The Point Of This B.S?

Good Question. After years of soaking up knowledge and wisdom from forums and blogs, I guess it’s time for me to throw out whatever I can contribute. I wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful at making a living online were it not for all of the free resources and opinions I have picked up across the net. Whether you find the B.S.  here worth anything is another story.

The focus here is going to be about topics that I have some familiarity with: Search Engine Optimization, Pay Per Click Advertising, Affiliate Marketing, Site Acquisition and Rehabilitation and probably a few other topics. I’ve tried virtually everything online including opening stores, wholesale distribution, arbitrage and probably many more I can’t think of at the moment. I’ve learned a lot but am far from being an expert.

I am going to try to make my posts give enough background on a topic to help the beginner understand the topic while maintaining some value for the experienced visitor.  There is nothing I hate more than a blog about a topic like SEO where they act like the advice “get backlinks” is some great revelation.  So somewhere I hope to strike a balance that might be hard to find.

As far as categorizing what color of hat I wear when it comes to SEO practices, I prefer to say “I don’t wear a hat, I wear a helmet”.  It a rough and tumble world out there and I don’t get caught up in categorizing my practices.  In that vein, I would call my strategy “aggressive but cautious”.  When I enter a niche, I generally bring several sites to the fight and am aware of the value and risks associated with each practice.  I try to put each site in a fight where it won’t get eaten alive.  I don’t point spammy links to my high value sites, but am more than happy to point them at a site I consider disposable.  In the end, I’m looking for traffic and each technique can generate traffic as long as you guard against the risks.

One thing that I have learned is that virtually all of the different things I have tried would have been successful if I had just given them the time they deserved rather than moving on to the next hot idea. Oh how I wish I had put the time into that price comparison site I created back in 1999 or that advertising network I got developed but never rolled out in 2001. Instead I lost interest in them when they weren’t immediately successful rather than nurturing them like they needed.

I make a very nice living with my online ventures and can’t think of anything I would rather be doing. The best part remains as it did when I created by first geocities site back in 1998… the sky’s the limit. Take that B.S and run with it.
